Lionel Messi stepped up and converted a penalty kick goal for Barcelona in a 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid, taking his all time goal tally to seven hundred. Seventy of those have come for the Argentinian National Team, and six hundred and thirty for FC Barcelona. Messi has been consistent his entire career, despite this being arguably Barcelona’s shakiest team since Messi joined the club.
Messi’s best chance to cement himself as the greatest of all time might have passed him by, with Argentina losing to France in the 2018 World Cup. However, he still remains one of the greats, and he has a chance to win the Champions League this summer with the shortened tournament returning in August as Barcelona will play Napoli in the second leg of the round of 16, with the first leg tied and 1-1. Will it be enough to be considered the best?
The Soccer Goal 
Feel like ‘best player in the world’ is unfair, especially to defenders and keepers. Would be better to break it down by position – GKs, defenders, midfielders, attackers. My personal votes are:
GK: Ter Stegen, though I’ll accept votes for Ederson, Allison, or even De Gea
Defender: Van Dijk, this is not up for debate
Midfielder: probably Kevin De Bruyne, but if someone tried to convince me one of Kante or Modric were the best I’d listen to them (and then tell them they’re wrong)
Forward: Messi or Cristiano. There’s no right answer, and there’s no wrong answer. These two players will go down as two of the best to ever play the game. In 2-3 years it’ll be Mbappe, but we’re not there yet.

I agree with most of what you said. I think three or so years ago De Gea could be considered, but he has had a dreadful season and has to be considered worse than Jan Oblak or Gianluigi Donnarumma. I agree with Van Dijk and KDB, but I disagree with your exclusion of Robert Lewandowski. This season he has been huge for Bayern, with forty-nine goals in all competitions in just forty-two games. Compare that to twenty-eight goals in thirty-seven games of Ronaldo, or even twenty-seven goals in thirty-seven games of Lionel Messi. Surely Lewandowski is one of the best in the world right now.
